A new political battle is unfolding around cryptocurrency in Washington after U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand called for an enforceable ban preventing presidents, their spouses and senior officials from issuing, sponsoring or profiting from crypto while in office. Her proposal comes as public concern over President Donald Trump’s crypto-related earnings intensifies.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted August 14–17 among 1,166 U.S. adults found that 63% considered Trump and his family’s cryptocurrency profits inappropriate, while only 32% viewed them as appropriate. The survey also found that 69% believe Trump’s private business interests influence his presidential decisions, adding another layer to the ongoing ethics debate.
The controversy centers largely on Trump-linked crypto ventures, including World Liberty Financial and the Trump-branded meme coin. Trump’s 2025 financial disclosure reported more than $1.4 billion in crypto-related income, according to reporting based on official disclosures. Trump has maintained that he has no day-to-day role in his family business and that his investments are independently managed.
Gillibrand is making the issue part of the broader debate surrounding the Digital Asset Market CLARITY Act. She argues that market-structure legislation should not establish clearer rules for the crypto industry while leaving potential conflicts of interest involving public officials unresolved. Her position could complicate an already politically sensitive path for the legislation.
For the crypto market, the immediate impact is likely to be more about regulatory sentiment than fundamentals. Bitcoin ($BTC) is generally less directly exposed to the Trump-family ventures than smaller tokens, but political uncertainty surrounding U.S. crypto policy can still influence market confidence. If the debate becomes associated with broader restrictions on cryptocurrency, risk sentiment could weaken and create short-term volatility across major digital assets.
Ethereum ($ETH), Solana ($SOL), XRP ($XRP) and other large-cap cryptocurrencies could also experience heightened volatility if investors begin pricing in a tougher regulatory environment. Meme coins could be particularly sensitive because the political controversy directly involves a high-profile Trump-branded token and raises broader questions about conflicts, speculation and celebrity-driven crypto markets.
However, an enforceable ban aimed specifically at presidents and senior officials would not necessarily represent a ban on cryptocurrency itself. Gillibrand has supported broader digital-asset regulation and has emphasized responsible innovation, consumer protection and clearer federal oversight.
The bigger question for investors is whether Washington can separate crypto regulation from political controversy. If lawmakers eventually produce clear market rules alongside enforceable ethics protections, the outcome could actually strengthen confidence in the U.S. digital-asset market over the longer term.
Until then, traders should watch the CLARITY Act negotiations, political rhetoric and regulatory developments closely. For $BTC and the wider crypto market, the issue may create short-term headline-driven volatility, but its longer-term significance will depend on whether Washington moves toward clearer rules or deeper restrictions.
